Once the principles of the alternative model are explained, few will disagree with them and most will want to adopt them

The problems of the traditional management model arise out of a misalignment between the processes used and the job that really needs to be done. This is a function of your strategic goals, your particular set of business circumstances and your beliefs about the best way to motivate and direct the activities of your people to achieve exceptional performance. The table above compares the management principles you believe in with the ‘vision’ of an alternative model based on the ‘Beyond Budgeting’ principles. There are six main elements:

1. Relative targets and rewards

2. Continuous planning and controls

3. Resources as needed

4. Governance for success

5. Freedom and capability to act

6. Customer accountability
