What is BBRT?
The Beyond Budgeting Round Table (BBRT) is an international network of member organizations with a common interest in improving their overall performance. The BBRT helps organizations learn from world-wide best practice studies and encourages them to share information, past successes and implementation experiences to develop dramatically improved solutions to traditional budgeting constraints.
The BBRT promotes a management model for the innovation age based on a set of principles leadership and process principles that enable organizations to achieve superior sustained success relative to their peers. Organizations following this approach rely on twelve key principles outlined in the book Beyond Budgeting: How Managers Can Break Free from the Annual Performance Trap, published by Harvard Business School Press.
BBRT membership is available globally and regionally and has had great success in both the European and the North American regions. BBRT produces two major members’ meetings each year in both Europe and North America, web seminars and industry group meetings. These events combined with the extensive, continuous research keep BBRT members up-to-date on the most innovative techniques in financial planning. The BBRT also publishes case studies, and routinely conducts CFO interviews nationwide in order to stay abreast of trends and innovations in finance.
The BBRT also offers industry-specific membership that allows for more tailored workshops, education, and collaboration among each industry group. The BBRT currently has interest groups in the following industries: financial services, healthcare, consumer products, insurance, and public/government. In 2008 the Round Table will launch an energy & utilities group, professional services group, retail, and hospitality. In addition, membership is also available by topic with the most extensive being Shared Services, and Lean Performance Management.

BBRT INSIGHTS research series
The next set BBRT INSIGHTS papers are examining the Finance and Planning perspective. One papers have been circulated to BBRT members in December:
Why rolling forecasts should be at the centre of the management process
Abstract: Many organizations are discovering the value of fast, light touch rolling forecasts. But how these forecasting processes are designed and implemented is key to their success. If they are seen by managers’ as just another control system to be submitted to head office at the end of every month or quarter then they will be seen as another reporting burden and only spurious data will result. But if they are seen as something that really improves the management process then there is a real opportunity for improvement based on quality data. This paper looks at how adaptive organizations are using rolling forecasts as an integral part of their management processes to improve visibility and respond more rapidly to changing events.
The BBRT INSIGHTS research papers are delivered to BBRT members on a regular basis. BBRT members can download the full paper from the BBRT Private Forum.

BBRT Public Sector Interest Group meeting, 5 December
Sir Michael Barber, former Head of the UK Prime Minister's Delivery Unit addressed the BBRT Public Sector Interest Group (PSIG) meeting on 5 December. Sir Michael based his address on his recent book "Instruction to Deliver" which recounts his experiences in focusing the entire government machine on delivering results, especially in health, education and law and order. Members enjoyed a very open and lively discussion with Sir Michael on these issues, those affecting their part of the public sector and the experiences of the BBRT. After Sir Michael's session, the members discussed their own plans and developments in performance management.
The next BBRT PSIG meeting will be held on 11 March 2008. Contact Peter Bunce for more details about the meeting and BBRT membership

Peter Bunce, BBRT Director with Benjamin Zander |
Transforming an organization's management model is at the heart of Beyond Budgeting and people are central to such a change. At the recent AME conference in Chicago Benjamin Zander, teacher and conductor of the Boston Philharmonic gave an inspirational talk about the Art of Possibility and transformation. Ben and Rosamund Stone Zander have written a fascinating book "The Art of Possibility" to help people (and therefore organizations) create 'transformational' improvements. Several points come out of the book and Ben's presentation:
