BBRT INSIGHTS research series

The following paper has been circulated to BBRT members since the last Newsletter:

Why most management tools don't work

Abstract: Management tools and techniques such as Economic Value Added, Activity-Based Costing and benchmarking are the building blocks of every consulting business. But the evidence is that few meet the expectations of their users. While there are many reasons for this, one common thread is that the right cultural context is critical. This paper examines why such a wide range of tools don’t work and how managers can make better selection decisions or derive more value from existing investments in these tools.

Handelsbanken on growth and bonuses

A series of articles in the Financial Times on 17 and 18 February have focused on Handelsbanken. Handelsbanken has long been one of BBRT’s star cases and exemplifies many of the Beyond Budgeting principles. It has emerged from the financial crisis as one of Europe’ strongest banks, having remained profitable throughout the downturn without receiving government support. In these articles the current CEO, Pär Boman and Magnus Uggla, Head of Southern UK Operations addressed why the bank has ruled out acquiring any of the bank assets soon to be sold by UK banking groups. Pär Boman stated that “Our strategy is to grow organically. We’re not open to huge acquisitions. It’s not important to be large. Our focus is to have the most satisfied customers”. On growth in the UK he said that “There are no budgets, no timetables for growth. But in the UK the potential is extremely huge. I can’t see any limit to our expansion”.

Mr Boman questioned the entire business case for bonuses. “I do not believe that you can combine long term commitments with short term incentives,” he said. “That doesn’t mean I’m against bonuses in principle but, in our company, we cannot see that they will help … in the long term”. Handelsbanken does pay a reward to all its staff, but this is a percentage of the profit made by the bank, and it’s paid into a retirement fund. So no profit, no reward (RBS take note).
